In March 2018, 38 burglaries were reported to the police, this is more than any one-month period over the 12 months prior.
London’s Fleet Street sits at the top of the City’s burglaries hotspots, accounting for 4.5% of London’s overall burglaries, they are closely followed by Minories and King William Street.
With a rise in burglaries in the City of London, Police are urging businesses to be savvier with their security. Between the period of March to April 2018 burglaries in the square mile increased by 110%.
Police advise that commercial buildings with multiple occupants seek savvier security solutions and remain on high alert as criminals tend to target where they can steal from several offices in quick succession.
Officers are also recommending that staff and visitors to commercial premises remain wary of ‘tail-gaters’ who may attempt to gain access through employee only entrances and doors as well as to challenge anyone they do not recognise.
Detective Sergeant Jonathan Ball from the City of London Police’s burglary team said “While the number of burglaries in the City is relatively low, premises still need to be on alert and regularly checking they have sufficient security measures in place”.
“Commercial offices often contain a large number of high-value items such as laptops, TVs and phones, meaning only one instance of burglary can cause a significant monetary loss to a business.”
Statistics show that there has been an increase in the number of burglaries taking place in London from 262 in 2016/17 to 272 in 2017/18.
It is important to understand that whilst the number of burglaries that take place in London is relatively low, they do take place. The more vulnerable your building is, the more likely your building will be one of the buildings burgled every year.
